Melbourne Girls’ College offers Music & Drama in our core curriculum at Years 7 & 8 and Music, Drama & Dance in our elective program and VCE classes. We have a vibrant co-curricular for students to join as well:
Choir rehearsals are open to all students. Students perform
for a variety of events throughout the year, including our Cabaret Night, the State School Spectacular, the Yarra City Carols by Candlelight, Spirit of Federation Square and our Presentation Night. The Choir have a camp early in the year to help prepare their repertoire. The Choir is led by our Vocal teachers, Ellyce Calder and Susan de Jong. They rehearse Monday lunchtimes.
This is our own “Glee” club, which is an auditioned ensemble from Years 9-11.
Students get to stage musical numbers developing their vocal and choreo
graphic skills. They are currently Victorian A’capella Champions and have various workshops throughout the year with a’capella groups such as Gin & Tonic and Coco’s Lunch. They rehearse Tuesdays afterschool and Wednesday lunchtimes, led by our vocal teachers, Ellyce Calder and Susan de Jong.
Our band is led by the talented Tony Hicks. All students are welcome to attend, even if they are not currently learning an instrument at MGC. The band has a camp early in the year to prepare their repertoire and have many performing opportunities throughout the year, including competing at Generations of Jazz in Mount Gambier and MGC’s Musical Production in August. They rehearse on Wednesday mornings before school.
Our string ensemble is led by our strings teacher, Wen Chin and is open to all girls, even if they are not learning from MGC. Students participate in our Music camp at the beginning of the year as well as performance evenings throughout the year such as our Soiree and Presentation Night. They rehearse on Wednesday and Thursday lunchtimes.
Our biannual Musical Production culminates in 6 evening performances in August. Students from all year levels are welcome to audition and whoever auditions is automatically in. Rehearsals are afterschool on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays. Enquiries to Ms Anne Corry
Our Student run House Production culminates in 3 evening performance in August. It is House based, and run by our Arts Captains. They rehearse Tuesday afterschool. All welcome.
